About the Project

This work is an oil pastel piece, sized 11x17 inches, and the first installment of a three-part series about the commercialization of food.

The gelatin-based fruit gummies, a very popular choice for children's lunchboxes, advertise a full serving of fruit and replace traditional apples, cherries, and grapes.

Special attention was given to using a variety of fruit that parallels the type of fruit in the snack pouches.

The fruit snacks are also in the foreground and sized larger, showing how for many kids, there is a preference towards fruit snacks rather than traditional fruits.

Additionally, the fruit snack pouches are placed in a bowl, mirroring the real fruit.

I chose the warm-tone tan background color because it was analogous to the fruit colors, while simultaneously complementing and drawing attention to the unnatural bright blue of the fruit snack packaging.
