Apples and Applesauce
The Evolution of Food Part 2. This drawing is part 2 of a 3-part series comparing processed and natural foods. Oil pastel, sized 11 in x 17 in.
About the Project
This work is an oil pastel piece, sized 11x17 inches, and the second installment of a three-part series about the commercialization of food.
Like "Fruits and Fruit Snacks", you can see the emphasis of the canned, industrialized applesauce in the foreground while the natural apples are in the background.
Special attention was given to adding a multitude of colors and depth to the apples that the processed food lacked, showing the beauty of natural foods.
The colors and shine of the apples are vibrant, while the dull plastic applesauce cover is muted in comparison.
I did set up this still-life so there was color unity because the colors in the applesauce lid mirror the green and red of the natural apples.
I chose a navy blue background color to contrast with the bright colors of the objects in the foreground.
