About the Project

I was responsible for developing all graphic design materials and executing marketing campaigns for Amazon Conservation, a nonprofit organization focused on the conservation of the Amazon Rainforest. As part of a small two-person communications team, I designed a vast repository digital and print content, managed and updated three organizational websites, and collaborated with Spanish-speaking colleagues in Peru and Bolivia to promote rainforest conservation initiatives.

The Challenge

The organization needed to increase public raise awareness, improve their digital presence, and encourage donations to conserve the Amazon Rainforest. The project had a very broad scope, requiring high-quality visuals and targeted campaigns to drive fundraising and visibility, while also ensuring organizational consistency and collaboration with sister organizations in Peru and Bolivia.

Scope and Process

Graphic Design and Branding

I designed a range of materials to promote rainforest conservation and engage donors, including annual reports, donor reports, large format banners, and monthly newsletters. I also developed materials for a high-profile Amazon Rainforest exhibition at the Peruvian Embassy in Washington DC.. My focus was to create strong organizational branding and key design elements that were then incorporated into a large repository of materials, ensuring consistency across all visual content.

Web Design and Maintenance

I worked on the content and design of three websites, ensuring that accessibility and user experience were prioritized. On Amazon Conservation's main website, I frequently added event pages, published blog posts, integrated donation software, or updated content. On the Monitoring of the Andean Project website, which tracked deforestation, and the Amazon Journeys website, which encouraged ecotourism at the organization's biological stations, I would assist as needed, adding new functionality or revising copy. I also wrote 3-4 blog posts per month, rendering complex scientific content into readable articles for a general audience.

Campaign Design and Execution

I developed and executed several digital fundraising campaigns, including a targeted Earth Day campaign, which led to a 47% increase in donations compared to the previous year. This included email campaigns and targeted social media campaigns. For these, I designed accompanying digital assets and outreach materials.

Social Media and Digital Content

I designed social media graphics for four platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn), leading to a 15%-37% growth in followers. I also designed social media ad campaigns that drove significant engagement and increased online visibility.

Video and Motion Graphics

I also edited promotional videos to increase engagement, most notably when promoting the organization’s major events and involvement in international conservation conferences. These assets were strategically formatted and released across various social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram), improving audience interaction and organizational awareness.

Collaboration and Strategy

I worked closely with Spanish-speaking colleagues in Peru and Bolivia to ensure that our messaging and content were aligned. Amazon Conservation was part of an alliance of three organizations in the U.S., Peru and Bolivia. I also worked with colleagues to gather and publish success stories for donor communications and helped develop messaging strategies that resonated with both local and international audiences.

What I Learned

This experience significantly enhanced my design and communication skills across a variety of areas due to the broad scope of responsibility. As part of a two-person communications team, I took the lead on drafting materials, with my manager providing review and feedback. Being in a small organization, I was responsible for all public communications, which allowed me to gain hands-on experience in marketing, social media campaigns, graphic and web design, print design, and even planning the material for the embassy exhibition. I valued the opportunity to work across multiple communication channels, as it enabled me to expand my skill set and take ownership of diverse projects.
